Saddlery and tack

Your saddlery and tack constitutes an important part of your equine equipment and it can be covered by horse insurance packages that you'll find on our site. There are a number of ways in which you can maintain and take care of your tack though – thus decreasing the chances of damage and wear and tear. Read on for some simple pointers about how to keep your tack and saddlery in good working order.

The saddle is a crucial part of your tack and it's vital to make sure it's kept in good condition. Not doing so could be a major safety risk and result in serious injury to you and your horse. Check your saddle frequently for any signs of wear and tear – cracking, for example. If you squeeze the sides of your saddle together there should be no movement. Movement indicates damage to the tree of the saddle that could damage your horse. Also regularly check the girth straps underneath the saddle to make sure all stitching is secure – a loose saddle when riding could easily result in an accident. Stirrup leathers also need to be free of cracks and other signs of wear.

The bridle is another very important part of your tack and should be well looked-after. Check buckles frequently to make sure they're not bent, reins to ensure there is no cracking or other signs of weakness and the bit for dirt or jagged edges that could damage the horse's mouth.
