If you're a first time horse owner and learning how to ride then choosing the right horse riding school for you is important. With so many out there, searching for the right one can be a time-consuming task. But it's important not to cut any corners when choosing your riding school. Read on for some tips about choosing a riding school.
One of the best ways to settle on a riding school that's suitable for you is through personal recommendation. If you've been inspired to take up horse riding by a friend or family member, ask them which riding school they attend. If, however, you are not proceeding on the basis of a personal recommendation, you should contact your local club Pony Club, for example – or search for a list of accredited schools in your area. Accreditation by a recognised national body (the British Horse Association, for example) is vital when choosing a riding school as this will mean that standard of safety are maintained and quality of teaching is high. Make sure that the school you have chosen has a fully qualified first-aider on site at all times. You'll be nervous when starting to ride so it's important everything is in place to give you peace of mind so you can concentrate on your new hobby.
Once you have chosen a riding school it's a good idea to go along in advance of your first lesson and watch some teaching in progress. This will give you a feel for the style of the teacher, the level of your fellow pupils and the personalities of the horses you'll be working with.
Make sure you are aware of all the administrative aspects of beginning lessons at a riding school. The cost of lessons, whether or not you book a lesson one at a time or in blocks, the public liability insurance of the school and whether you need any horse insurance cover yourself, are all important factors and should be investigated before the first lesson. And finally, make sure you have a good riding hat. Once all this is done, you can relax, have fun and really start to enjoy your new hobby.
Whilst your horse is at pony club our horse and pony insurance policies will provide you with protection for the rider, your horse and third parties.
